Joanne C. Finn, M.A.

Licensed Kindermusik educator

Kindermusik is an early childhood music and movement program based on the beliefs that every child is musical, every parent is the child's most important teacher, and the home is the most important learning environment.

Joanne Finn M.A., is better known as “Joy-ann!” by small children

She’s been playing music and making up songs for kids since her

teen days. A self-taught folk guitarist, Joanne was given a strong

musical foundation with Suzuki violin lessons as a child.  It paid

off and a love of music permeates her home.  More than one

neighborhood toddler has been heard  requesting “More mooosic

Joy-ann!”  Impromptu dancing with scarves may occur in the

Finn family living room with her 5-year old daughter and friends.

Education and Teaching Background
Joanne began working with adults and children with disabilities in

high school.  This developed into a long-term love of working with

children, especially those with special needs. She received her BA

in Psychology at Catholic University of America in 1987, and

completed two master’s level programs at California State

University, Long Beach receiving a school psychology credential

in 1991.  Joanne currently works part-time as a school psychologist

with Mt. Diablo Unified School District.

Musical Background

Joanne has been playing guitar and singing for church choirs for

more than 25 years.  She has continued her musical development

by studying piano and receiving formal vocal training. She received

 her Kindermusik license in 2006.

Joanne shares her love of music:
Guitar and music passion developed into a regular habit of leading
community song circles and informal musical gatherings of friends.  And I found that children were often the best music makers in the group as they were free to explore sounds without inhibitions!  When our daughter came into our lives, my husband, Bob, and I rediscovered the power of music to grow the connection between parent and child. Inspired by our daughter’s responses to music, I pursued Kindermusik training as an educational tool for both parents and children.”
